Our History

San Fernando has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. The town of San Fernando was originally known as San Fernando de Naparima. The name “Naparima” referred to the nearby Anaparima Hill. However, the town’s name was eventually shortened to San Fernando.

In 1853, San Fernando was incorporated as a borough, gaining greater administrative autonomy and self-governance. During the mid-19th century, San Fernando began to grow as a town. Infrastructure development, including roads and the construction of a courthouse, fueled its development.

Town Hall, was a wooden structure constructed in the year 1834 on the corner of Harris Promenade and Penitence Street. In 1930, a stone foundation was laid by governor Sir Alfred Claud Hollis which facilitated the replacement of the original building in 1931, to the building that exists today. The original building was continuously extended to facilitate the San Fernando City Council’s expanding functions. Later, in 1988, San Fernando was elevated to City status and a new crest was designed, incorporating all the elements of life in San Fernando.

The history of San Fernando is characterized by the influence of different cultures and the gradual development of the town. Today, it is a thriving urban center with a diverse population and a rich cultural heritage.

The City’s motto is  “Sanitas Fortis” which means in a healthy environment we will find strength.
